    Uses Notes:

This plant is great in containers where good drainage is ensured, but is also a great garden plant as long as well-drained soil is available. It is very heat tolerant and is native to regions with low humidity and periods of drought.

    Maintenance Notes:

Plant in containers or well-drained landscape beds. Once plants are established in the landscape they shouldn't need much care. The best performance is provided by soil kept on the dry side. Overwatering is the most likely problem you'll have with these plants. Do not treat them too well and they'll be happy campers.

This is not a plant that needs a lot of plant food. For plants in the landscape a dose of controlled release plant food at planting will usually be sufficient. If you live in a climate with a very long summer, reapplying after 3 or 4 months may be beneficial.

For plants in containers, a dose of controlled release plant food at planting time is also recommended. However, reapplication of plant food is more likely to be needed in containers. Monitor your plant and reapply if the plant looks to be tired or if the foliage seems too light.  A water soluble plant food can add instant energy if you notice that your plant seems to be struggling. A water soluble plant food application to quickly increase energy, followed by a controlled release application of plant food will keep your plants happy for months.

If your planting gets a bit open or straggly looking, you can use a sharp pair of scissors or pruning shears to trim it back.  Look to take no more than 1/3 the volume of the plant. I usually follow a trim, with an application of water soluble plant food. The plant food/trim combination will stimulate new growth and branching and after a week or two to recover will result in a better branched and more floriferous plant. In long season climates, trimming more than once can be beneficial.

    • These flowers look delicate. They are a beautiful color. The yellow flowers do not last long, and I have to deadhead them every day in order for them to look nice. So you DO need to deadhead them, and although doing so is very easy, it's a pain in the neck to do so every day. I have them in two window boxes in the front of my house. I'm not sure I would buy them again, however, because the flowers are so short-lived and require daily deadheading. But they are lovely and hardy.

    • I purchased two of these online this spring and planted them in a container on the east side of my home. It gets 7-8 hours of sun per day then moves into shade. It has been between 95-100 degrees F here for the past two weeks. This plant has held up beautifully, even with watering every other day on occasion. I can definitely attest to the drought and heat tolerance of this plant. It is thriving - blooming, growing - even in this crazy heat.
