I have 4 of these. Of my many shrubs and bushes these are by far my favorite. The Ruby Anniversary starts blooming in spring and bloom right up until the snow falls with very little if any maintenance. The soft sweet scent is just enough to make me stop and breath in the freshness. I can count on these year after year to impress, which in MI can be difficult.

Hardy abelia for summer fragrance, even in USDA zone 5!
If you aren't familiar with abelia, here's one you ought to get to know. Ruby Anniversary® abelia is an unusually hardy abelia, thriving even in zone 5. People love abelia because it blooms summer through fall with very fragrant flowers that attract butterflies and hummingbirds, plus it's shade-tolerant and resistant to both deer and rabbits. New growth emerges glossy red and ages to a handsome dark green. Graceful, arching habit makes it a perfect choice for late season fragrance in your perennial garden, foundation plantings, or any place you can enjoy its flowers and fragrance often.
Top three reasons to grow Ruby Anniversary abelia:
- Very fragrant flowers in late summer and fall
- Unbothered by deer or rabbits
- extends all the benefits of abelia to gardeners in zone 5 (and thrives in warmer areas, too).

I bought Ruby Anniversary 2 yrs ago. I am very happy with Abelia. This is my first one ever to plant. I trim it in the spring to control it as I have it planted in my front garden. It is a big beneficial insect attractor. I never go by it without seeing them. Deer and rabbit passing it up is important in my garden. It grew fast now it is 4 ft. I am buying my second abelia which is a little smaller to fit in another garden. You’ll love this and oh yeah flowers are pink and white and beautiful. Loves the heat here also.
