Grower Tips:

-High light is best for optimal growth.

-These plant like a higher light level than traditional tuberous begonias, and are full sun plants in most parts of the country. In areas of low humidity, protect from hot mid-day sun.

-These plants will be easiest to produce if timed for late spring to summer sales.

-The main point is to keep plants on the dry side - avoid too much water (soaked media has no air spaces - critical for root development)

-Use a high porosity potting mix

-Provide excellent air circulation

-Fungicide drenches after transplant are beneficial

There are 4 keys to successful production of Mandalay. They are - grow them dry, provide high light and long days, grow them warm, and keep them well fed.

Plants must be provided with long days, especially in winter and early spring. Photoperiod should be extended to 16 hour days through daylength extension, night interruption or cyclical lighting.

Proper timing so that plants are sold quickly will be important in smaller pot sizes.

Constant feed of 200-250 ppm N - reduced prior to sale to enhance bloom to foliage ratio. Slow release fertilizer can also be beneficial.
