    Uses Notes:

Shrub borders, grouping, masses, specimen plants, and containers (plant in ground in fall.) This makes an excellent mass planting, and can also be used as a cut flower.

    Maintenance Notes:

Prefers well-drained soils but fairly adaptable to other soil types. It is best to prune immediately after flowering. Will flower sporadically on current season's growth. Medium moisture. Fertilize in early spring by applying a slow release fertilizer specialized for trees and shrubs. Follow the label for the recommended rate of application.

Isn't it romantic! Rosy-pink flowers add a touch of romance when displayed against the dark glossy foliage. The foliage is much darker than that of older varieties like 'Java Red'. It contrasts beautifully with the rosy-pink flowers, making for a high impact display in the garden. This variety produces copious amounts of flowers in spring, and will re-bloom throughout the summer. The trumpet-like flowers are adored by hummingbirds! Try using Wine & Roses weigela's colorful branches in flower arrangements. It can also be enjoyed as an accent plant or used for a dramatic mass planting. It is fast growing and trouble free, making it an easy way to add season long color to the garden.

Here is a nice comparison of our entire Wine series of weigela.

    • I planted two PW Wine and Roses when I removed the evergreen border at the front of my house. At the same time, I planted other plants that I bought and some that I transplanted from some of my other gardens. All looked really great and caused pleasant comments from those walking by. Everything that I planted popped back to life this spring except the Wine and Roses. The planting position is on the south side of my house and catches the morning sun and continues to get sun until late morning or early afternoon. The soil was reworked with a bit of compost and sand as well as a small amount of fertilizer. After planting, I added wood mulch. Any comments as to what I might have done wrong will be welcome because the shrubs fit very well into my scheme. Thank you, Dan

Unsatisfied Did not survive, inferior performance or did not bloom well - won't grow again.
    • Purchased 2 from Clover's Garden Center in Willowbrook IL May 13 2019 Largest ones they could get and waiting 5 weeks to come in. Look great after planting and until fall. Was looking forward to this spring. Discussed with the folks at Clover's and not reply. I've have other wine and rose even smaller that starting to grow again early April but these 2 don't seem to be doing the same. I kept the buckets information cards and receipt spent $85.00 and expected a few years out of them not one season. I would like some type of explanation on this Thanks Shawn Scott cell#630-258-9690

    • This never really grew after planted it, and in the third spring it was dead. It was planted on the south side of a house with plenty of sun in Cleveland, zone 6.

    • We have planted 2 Wine & Roses weigela in the landscape beds of 3 of our last 4 homes. It is a show stopper, people are always commenting on how stunning it is. We pick a spot where it can grow to its hearts content, untrimmed, as I love the natural shape of it . We will definitely add another pair to our landscape beds when we move to our next home too! I only wish I could add a photo of my 4 year old shrubs in full bloom.. they are spectacular!

    • Love this plant not only for the beautiful pink blooms, but also for the brown foliage. I have two of those planted in two very large planters in my patio entrance for over a year. They bloomed lightly the whole summer last year. I did not pruned last year, just protected the roots with mulched leaves during the winter and they came back great this spring, it bloomed heavily for over a month, then a pruned to keep it's size down. The blooms kept coming back in the old wood until now, it's already fall and it still looks great.

    • This was planted by the contractor prior to my purchase. They planted the three bushes too close together so I'll have to thin them but the foliage is lovely and they are very low maintenance.
