I've started collecting Hydrangeas Arborescens because I think these plants are stunning and extremely precious in the shady and woody spots of the garden. As I also like to take note of the history of my plants could you please tell me when was this culivar introduced? I also have 'Puffed green', 'Emerald lace', 'Hayes sturburts', 'Incrediball', 'Invincibell' and Annabelle, of course. Thank you

Lime Rickey hydrangea is an outstanding native hydrangea with large, disc-like blooms. The flowers start out a fresh green and age to rich jade, all accented with pink pollen for a unique accent. The stems on this hydrangea are exceptionally strong, and unlike 'Annabelle,' hold up to even the strongest summer storms without bending or flopping. We've seen this plant withstand 2" of rainfall in one hour, completely unphased! It makes an excellent cut flower and dries well, too. And because it's a super hardy smooth hydrangea, you can rely on it to bloom every year no matter where you plant it, no matter how you prune it.

As for pruning, cut the entire plant back by about one-third its total height each spring, just as the new growth begins to emerge on stems. This serves to build up a strong, supportive, woody base while also encouraging abundant new growth for plenty of flowers.
If you wish to fertilize, an application of a rose fertilizer in early spring, once the soil has thawed, is sufficient.

This is my absolute favorite hydrangea! Mine is growing in front of the foundation of my house, along the North wall. It receives probably 3 hours of direct morning sun and is then in bright shade the rest of the day. This plant does outstandingly well. I purchased it late last winter and it has almost tripled in size already. The stems are strong, the leaves are big and bold dark green, and the blooms are outstanding. I love the tiny little petals compared to the Paniculata hydrangeas. And if you look closely enough, in the center of each floret there is a pretty little violet stamen! I can't say enough good things about this plant. If the classic Limelight is too large for you and you want a plant that will really stand out, Lime Rickey is the way to go!

I love this Hydrangea. Has done well in my garden and put on lots of healthy growth In its first year. A great backdrop for all the various types and colour of hydrangea I own. Which is no easy task!

Add to the positive comments above that it looks good all year round, even when dormant, and is in nearly constant motion from the activity of backyard birds. It has been strong and vigorous here in Virginia, with no special attention. We love this plant.

I bought 2 of those for the garden- we live on a mountain and wind is a big factor, plus we have heavy clay but these plants have been fantastic. Planted both on a sunny location in the middle of Summer, and they've performed incredibly well, not needing as much water as I thought they would even with hot afternoon sun, and flowering within a week. It's October now, windy and temps in the low 50s but they keep flowering and have grown to almost double the size. Would definitely buy more and recommend to anyone as a very easy to care, unfussy, beautiful shrub!
