    Features

Welcome spring with sweet fragrance! Sweet Talker viburnum doesn't need the gift of gab to charm you: it does it all by being one of the very first shrubs to bloom in late winter/early spring. Look forward to hundreds of pink, trumpet-shaped flowers that emit a spicy honey scent, even in those first early days of spring sunshine. The rest of the year, enjoy very handsome leathery foliage that is ideal for landscaping around your home, gardens, or hedging. Foliage takes on dramatic purple-burgundy tones in cool weather. Sweet Talker viburnum was developed by legendary plant breeder Dr. Tom Ranney, who wanted to combine the beauty of early-blooming viburnums with the heat tolerance of less showy ones.

Available in better garden centers in spring 2021.

    Maintenance Notes:

Viburnums are very low maintenance plants. They don't require regular pruning, though it's a good idea to remove very old stems each year after the plant has been established for several years, as old stems do not flower and fruit as abundantly as younger ones. If you wish to prune Sweet Talker viburnum, immediately after flowering is the best time to do that.

Plant in well-drained soil. Viburnums are quite shade tolerant, but habit, flowering, and fruiting will be best if the plant gets some sun.

If desired, fertilize in early spring with a granular fertilizer formulated for woody plants, like a rose fertilizer.

    • First of all, it's not an evergreen in zone 7a! Very misleading description. Also, it does not grow well in shade. Much better in part shade to full sun. Wish I knew that before I decided to purchase and plant. Now I have to move several plants and replace with the evergreen variety for a privacy hedge in the winter. Besides that, a handsome plant if you plant it in a right spot.
